Process Overview: Website Design+ Development

A website is more than just a digital presence — it’s a strategic tool that communicates your brand, engages your audience, and drives measurable outcomes. A structured process ensures that every design and development decision is informed by business goals, user needs, and brand identity, while incorporating client feedback to deliver a site that’s both functional and memorable.

  1. Discovery + Planning
    1. Identify business goals and KPIs for the site
    2. Map user journeys and prioritize content hierarchy
    3. Audit existing site for analytics, SEO, and technical performance
    4. Create sitemap and page-level content strategy
    5. Client presentations: Review findings, confirm goals, and gain alignment before moving to design
  2. Wireframing + User eXperience Design
    1. Develop low-fidelity wireframes to map structure and functionality
    2. Test navigation and content flow with key users
    3. Align layout with brand identity and storytelling goals
    4. Client presentations: Present wireframes for home page and key sub-pages, desktop and mobile, gather feedback and refine
  3. Visual + User Interface Design
    1. Develop 3 style tiles — a cross between a mood board and user interface — to explore how typography, color, imagery, buttons, and calls to action come together to shape the visual direction
    2. Gather feedback from discussions to determine the preferred direction and refine toward a final design concept
    3. Apply the selected concept to home page and representative sub-page layouts for desktop and mobile
    4. Define interactive states (hover effects, animations), ensure accessibility and responsive design standards
    5. Client presentations: Review and refine final concept for approval
  4. Content + Development
    1. Build front-end (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and back-end (CMS or custom platform)
    2. Integrate with third-party tools (plugins, CRM, analytics, e-commerce, booking, etc.)
    3. Test across browsers and devices
    4. Ensure ADA accessibility compliance
    5. Write or revise SEO-optimized, brand-aligned content
    6. Source or produce imagery, video, and graphics
    7. Implement calls-to-action aligned with conversion goals
  5. Testing + Launch
    1. Conduct usability testing and QA (forms, links, integrations)
    2. Optimize load speed and security
    3. Soft-launch with stakeholder review before going live
  6. Post-Launch Optimization
    1. Monitor analytics and heatmaps
    2. Track conversions and other metrics
    3. Implement updates based on user behavior
    4. Provide a 2-week grace period to address any functional issues and ensure smooth operation
    5. Establish an ongoing maintenance and content refresh plan

Why process and a website matter

By following a structured website redesign and development process, organizations save time, reduce risk, and ensure that every component — from navigation and layout to visuals and content — supports business goals and user needs. The website serves as the central hub of a brand’s digital ecosystem, where nearly all marketing, social, and communication efforts ultimately lead. Providing multiple concepts, iterative presentations, and careful attention to responsive and accessible design ensures a final product that is both impactful today and adaptable for the future.
