Process Overview: Website Design+ Development
A website is more than just a digital presence — it’s a strategic tool that communicates your brand, engages your audience, and drives measurable outcomes. A structured process ensures that every design and development decision is informed by business goals, user needs, and brand identity, while incorporating client feedback to deliver a site that’s both functional and memorable.
- Discovery + Planning
- Identify business goals and KPIs for the site
- Map user journeys and prioritize content hierarchy
- Audit existing site for analytics, SEO, and technical performance
- Create sitemap and page-level content strategy
- Client presentations: Review findings, confirm goals, and gain alignment before moving to design
- Wireframing + User eXperience Design
- Develop low-fidelity wireframes to map structure and functionality
- Test navigation and content flow with key users
- Align layout with brand identity and storytelling goals
- Client presentations: Present wireframes for home page and key sub-pages, desktop and mobile, gather feedback and refine
- Visual + User Interface Design
- Develop 3 style tiles — a cross between a mood board and user interface — to explore how typography, color, imagery, buttons, and calls to action come together to shape the visual direction
- Gather feedback from discussions to determine the preferred direction and refine toward a final design concept
- Apply the selected concept to home page and representative sub-page layouts for desktop and mobile
- Define interactive states (hover effects, animations), ensure accessibility and responsive design standards
- Client presentations: Review and refine final concept for approval
- Content + Development
- Build front-end (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and back-end (CMS or custom platform)
- Integrate with third-party tools (plugins, CRM, analytics, e-commerce, booking, etc.)
- Test across browsers and devices
- Ensure ADA accessibility compliance
- Write or revise SEO-optimized, brand-aligned content
- Source or produce imagery, video, and graphics
- Implement calls-to-action aligned with conversion goals
- Testing + Launch
- Conduct usability testing and QA (forms, links, integrations)
- Optimize load speed and security
- Soft-launch with stakeholder review before going live
- Post-Launch Optimization
- Monitor analytics and heatmaps
- Track conversions and other metrics
- Implement updates based on user behavior
- Provide a 2-week grace period to address any functional issues and ensure smooth operation
- Establish an ongoing maintenance and content refresh plan
Why process and a website matter
By following a structured website redesign and development process, organizations save time, reduce risk, and ensure that every component — from navigation and layout to visuals and content — supports business goals and user needs. The website serves as the central hub of a brand’s digital ecosystem, where nearly all marketing, social, and communication efforts ultimately lead. Providing multiple concepts, iterative presentations, and careful attention to responsive and accessible design ensures a final product that is both impactful today and adaptable for the future.
